The ONE THING Spartanburg moms need to have the best pregnancy possible

As a mom you are always wanting to do the best for your children. You want to be the healthiest role model you can be for them, starting before your pregnancy even occurs.

You’re doing all the important things: pelvic floor physical therapy, nutrition and diet changes, supplements, exercise, sleeping hacks, learning about baby milestones and vaccines and feeding tips…the list goes on. Yet, you are still experiencing anxiety, pain, trouble sleeping, morning sickness, and mom brain, to name a few.

All of these modalities are incredibly helpful and important, but there is a vital part of you and your baby’s health missing from that list: caring for your nervous system. This is the ONE THING all Spartanburg moms and moms-to-be need in order to have the best pregnancy and birth possible.

Your body’s conductor - the nervous system

Everything your body does during pregnancy and birth is organized by your nervous system. You can think about your body like an orchestra, and your nervous system is the conductor. Your nervous system is made up of your brain, your spinal cord, and all your nerves that go to every cell, tissue, and organ in your body.

During pregnancy and birth there are a multitude of changes happening to mom and baby. For the mother there are a lot of hormonal changes that occur. Your nervous system conducts the show, innately knowing when to instruct your endocrine organs to release oxytocin and relaxin, when to raise and lower HCG, progesterone, and estrogen levels.

While baby is growing the mother’s body must also make changes to accommodate the new passenger. Mom’s organs start to move out of the way to make room, and the pelvis starts to change shape to allow for the birth to take place.

All of these changes are orchestrated by the nervous system, without you consciously having to think about it.

Even your new role as a mother is affected by your nervous system. Think about your own mother and grandmother: when they were stressed, how did that affect them as a mother? What sort of cultural rules are being passed to you from your mother and grandmother?

With a healthy, regulated nervous system, you as a new mom are able to respond differently and adapt to stresses, taking the gifts of motherhood being passed to you and adding your own gifts.

Your regulated nervous system gives you the power to choose how you want to play out your role as a mom.

The mother’s nervous system is communicating with the new baby’s nervous system every moment of the day. If the conductor of the orchestra can’t see the horn section and the horn section can’t see him, how is that going to affect their communication and the music they’re trying to play?

It’s the same thing with the nervous system of mom and baby, if there is interference it’s going to affect the communication and function of both mom and baby. This miscommunication can lead to things like pelvic pain, morning sickness, blood pressure issues, gestational diabetes, mental health struggles and other more significant developmental struggles.

The best place to start:

The best place to start with taking care of your nervous system is getting it checked by a chiropractor. We are trained to assess the function of your entire nervous system to find where it’s working best, and where there is interference taking place.

When you get adjusted your body is able to remove the interference from your nervous system so that your body is able to communicate with itself. This leads to improved function in all areas: better sleep, better movement, better adaptation to stress, more focus, and more sense of “I got this”.

A healthy nervous system for the mom leads to a healthier nervous system for your baby. The symphony of your body is all on the same page!

Some things moms have told us after receiving nervous system care:

  • “I wish I had found this for my first pregnancy.”

  • “My morning sickness went away after my first adjustment.”

  • “My pelvic pain has improved.”

  • “My second pregnancy and birth was so much smoother than my first because I was getting nervous system care.”

  • “My child is in the 99th percentile for growth and meeting milestones and I know it’s because we get nervous system care.”

With a healthy nervous system all of the other things you do to prepare, like pelvic floor PT, birthing classes, meditation practices, lactation consultants, and diet changes will be able to help you function at their fullest potential.

Your first step:

The first step to taking care of your nervous system is to get it checked. Talk with your chiropractor about what assessments they can do for your nervous system and what care plans they have to best support pregnant moms.
